Accessory breast reduction is a surgery that reduces accessory breast tissue bulging near the armpit to smooth the line of the armpit and the side of the breast. An accessory breast is a condition in which mammary gland tissue in areas such as the armpit makes them bulge, which differs from a buildup of fat alone, so the cause is diagnosed with 3D measurement and precision ultrasound and then corrected with liposuction, combined with excision of the mammary gland tissue when needed. Swelling and bruising may occur after surgery, and how long they take to subside varies from person to person. A scar remains at the incision site, and in rare cases bleeding, infection, inflammation, or left–right asymmetry may occur, which may require additional treatment. Seroma, a collection of fluid at the surgical site, may develop, or the skin surface may look uneven, and there may be reduced sensation in the armpit and inner arm or a feeling of tightness in the armpit. Depending on how much tissue remains, part of the bulge may still be visible, so the extent of reduction is decided after an examination. Please tell us at your pre-surgery consultation about any medications you take, including blood thinners such as anticoagulants, as well as any medical conditions and whether you smoke. During recovery, please avoid alcohol and smoking and attend follow-up visits as scheduled. Please make your decision after you have been fully informed of the risks and of alternative options. If an accessory breast contains mammary gland tissue, it can be affected by hormones and swell or hurt around menstruation or during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Whether the cause is an accessory breast is determined after checking the condition of the mammary gland tissue with ultrasound.
When only liposuction is performed, a small opening is made in the armpit crease, and when excision of mammary gland tissue is combined, an incision is made in the armpit crease, so a scar remains there. When it is combined with breast augmentation through an armpit incision, no additional opening or incision is made. How the scar settles varies depending on your skin condition.
The surgery takes about 30 minutes under sleep anesthesia, and you go home the same day without hospitalization. There is no separate stitch removal, light exercise is possible from the day after surgery, and about one follow-up visit is needed after surgery. How long swelling and bruising take to subside varies from person to person.
