Blepharoptosis Correction

Also called Ptosis Correction, Droopy Eyelid Surgery

Ptosis correction is a surgery that corrects blepharoptosis, a condition in which weak eye-opening strength causes the upper eyelid to cover the iris, so that the iris shows appropriately; a double eyelid line is created at the same time if needed. Depending on the skin thickness of the eyelid and the amount of fat, it is performed with a non-incisional or incisional method. At ETONNE in Gangnam, Seoul (Gangnam-daero, Nonhyeon Station), the surgery is performed by board-certified plastic surgeons Dr. Cho Jeongmok, Dr. Kim Harkyoung, Dr. Kim Jaegon, and Dr. Koo Heetae.

CURATED EYE SURGERY

Precautions

Swelling and bruising may occur after surgery, and how long they take to subside varies from person to person. Incisional ptosis correction leaves a scar at the incision site. Regardless of the method, in rare cases bleeding, infection, inflammation, or left–right asymmetry may occur, which may require additional treatment. Swelling and the course of recovery differ between the non-incisional and incisional methods, and in the early period after surgery the eyes may feel as though they do not close completely or may feel dry. The correction may settle more or less than expected, the non-incisional method may loosen over time, and if the two eyes settle at different opening heights, additional correction may be needed. Please tell us at your pre-surgery consultation about any medications you take, including blood thinners such as anticoagulants, as well as any medical conditions and whether you smoke. During recovery, please avoid alcohol and smoking and attend follow-up visits as scheduled. Please make your decision after you have been fully informed of the risks and of alternative options. Results and recovery vary from person to person.

FAQ

What is ptosis, and can droopy, sleepy-looking eyes be treated with ptosis correction?

Ptosis (blepharoptosis) is a condition in which weak eye-opening strength causes the upper eyelid to cover the iris, and it can be a cause of eyes that look tired and sleepy. At ETONNE, we examine whether you have true ptosis or pseudoptosis, whether you use your forehead muscles to open your eyes, your brow position, and other factors before deciding whether ptosis correction is needed.

How do non-incisional and incisional ptosis correction differ?

Non-incisional ptosis correction suits eyes with thin skin and little fat and tends to cause less swelling, but it is difficult to remove fat with this method. Incisional ptosis correction allows a wider range of correction and can remove a large amount of fat, so it suits eyes with thick skin and a lot of fat, and it tends to cause some swelling. At ETONNE, we choose the method after examining your skin thickness and the amount of fat.

How is ptosis correction different from double eyelid surgery?

The main purpose of double eyelid surgery is to create a double eyelid line, while ptosis correction adjusts the eye-opening muscle to correct how much of the iris shows. A double eyelid line can be created during ptosis correction, and if you use your forehead muscles to open your eyes, the two surgeries may be considered together.

Will there be scars?

Incisional ptosis correction leaves a scar at the incision site. Non-incisional ptosis correction involves almost no skin incision, so there are no stitches to remove, but small marks may remain. How the scar settles varies depending on the method and your skin condition.

What are the anesthesia, surgery time, and recovery schedule?

The surgery takes about 30–60 minutes under local anesthesia or sleep anesthesia, and you go home the same day without hospitalization. Stitches are removed after about 5 days with the incisional method and are not removed with the non-incisional method, contact lenses can be worn from the day after surgery, makeup is possible from about 3 days after surgery, and about one follow-up visit is needed after surgery. How long swelling and bruising take to subside varies from person to person.
