Nipple correction is a surgery that corrects the size and shape of the nipples, inverted nipples that are set inward, and asymmetry between the two nipples. After diagnosing the size and shape of the nipples together with whether you breastfeed, the surgical method is decided with the aim of preserving the milk ducts. Swelling and bruising may occur after surgery, and how long they take to subside varies from person to person. A scar remains at the incision site, and in rare cases bleeding, infection, inflammation, or left–right asymmetry may occur, which may require additional treatment. After surgery, the sensation of the nipple may become reduced or change, and when an inverted nipple has been corrected, the nipple may retract again depending on the degree of inversion. If an inverted nipple recurs and the milk ducts are divided, breastfeeding may become difficult. In rare cases blood circulation to the nipple may be impaired. If you have plans for childbirth or breastfeeding, please tell us at your consultation. Please tell us at your pre-surgery consultation about any medications you take, including blood thinners such as anticoagulants, as well as any medical conditions and whether you smoke. During recovery, please avoid alcohol and smoking and attend follow-up visits as scheduled. Please make your decision after you have been fully informed of the risks and of alternative options. It includes nipple reduction, which reduces large nipples; inverted nipple correction, which brings out a nipple that is set inward; and correction that reduces differences in size and shape between the two nipples. Nipple reduction is performed while preserving the milk ducts. Inverted nipple correction is also first performed with a method that preserves the milk ducts; if the inversion recurs, the milk ducts may need to be divided, and in that case breastfeeding may become difficult. A scar remains at the incision site. The incision is made at the border between the nipple and the areola, and how the scar settles varies depending on your skin condition.
Depending on the degree of inversion and the condition of the tissue beneath the nipple, the nipple may retract again after surgery. At ETONNE, we decide on the surgical method after examining the degree of inversion, and check the position and shape of the nipple at follow-up visits after surgery.
The surgery takes about 30 minutes under local anesthesia or sleep anesthesia, and you go home the same day without hospitalization. Stitches are removed after about 7 days, daily activities are possible from the day after surgery, and about two follow-up visits are needed after surgery. How long swelling and bruising take to subside varies from person to person.
